A popular question that has come up is whether or not res students can bring their own mini fridge into their res rooms on move-in day. The short answer is no. But you can
rent one from a company called "
Coldex" if your room doesn't already come with one.
The
policy was changed to a rent-only one and here's the breakdown:
- NOTE: Bunk and Loft rooms ALREADY contain one refrigerator at no extra cost. Also, apartment and Suite units ALREADY contain a full sized refrigerator in the common kitchen area.
- NOTE: Traditional-style residences have kitchen facilities on each floor where there is a shared, full-sized refrigerator is available for your use - but keep in mind the entire floor has access to this fridge.
- If you decide you'd like to rent a fridge, Coldex gives you the option to rent 3 or 5 cubic foot refrigerators for your res room.
- Only one refrigerator is permitted per bedroom - that means if you have a roommate, you need to work out with them whether you'd like to share a fridge. Visit the Application Status step in the Residence Portal to locate the contact information of roomate(s). Through the portal, you can message your roomates to see if they are interested in sharing the cost of a fridge. ONLY ONE roommate is to take responsibility for contacting Coldex to complete the booking and pay for the fridge.
- If you make arrangements in advance with Coldex, your refrigerator will be in your room at move-in all set up for you and ready to go! Coldex will also return the fridge at the end of the academic year so you DONT have to move it in and out of the room.
Q: Why can't you bring your own fridge?
The university provides this explanation: "This policy ensures all refrigerators entering the residence buildings are properly cleaned, energy efficient and in good working order: this assists the University in providing a safe and healthy living environment in residence and contributes to the University's sustainability efforts."
Q: What happens if you show up with a fridge on move-in day?
As personal refrigerators are not permitted, if you bring one at move-in, it will not be unloaded and you will be asked to send it home with your family and friends.
