Another important aspect is attachments. You can see my laptop in the centre here. Since I do not own a desktop, it is my primary computer.
Not that I purchased a 19' widescreen monitor, a keyboard (just happens to be gaming), a good mouse (happens to be gaming as well), an external hard drive (hard to see, it is the black box beside my Maclean's University Guide), a high quality microphone, and, most importantly, a picture of Stephen Colbert!
I find the extra monitor helps me when I am researching journals and writting my essays at the same time. So if you are only going to have a laptop, make the investment and make sure your home workspace is productive.

Joey,
The thing is, I'm still not sure what I want... I want a MacBook, but I think, perhaps it would be more practical to get a windows laptop..
Chad,
I haven't heard too many things about Dell, but I want to look around for the perfect one for me lol

As a journalist, I stand out for having a PC. There are a lot of people that swear by their Mac's including many people at McMaster. (Among the Silhouette, I am usually the only one working on a PC.) There is a strong Mac community at McMaster, so you would not stick out having one at McMaster.

Everyone who has ever bought a mac became a mac fiend! Even though you can't run windows applications, no one has ever complained about it. In fact, I've never heard of anyone complain about any mac laptops. I wanted to get a 15'mac book pro, but they are so expensive: >2100$ with tax. I can get a windows laptop with the same specs for about $1400. I guess with a mac you are also paying for an amazingly good OS. Make sure whatever laptop you get, it has a video card so you can easily attach external screeens.
It all comes down to how much money you want to spend on it.

whoa Joey! Thats one killer setup you got there! lol. I love how you have a Colbert magazine there, as well as Coca Cola (which im sure all writers are drinking to stay awake lol). You always keep your Macleans university guide handy on your table like that to refer to at any point in time? heh. I agree, a duel monitor is a must for a desktop setup. I bought a huge 22" LCD instead of having two screens. I highly recommend it... PROVIEW from Futureshop... amazing price, superior pixel resolution!

I actually do keep it handy, the student and university issues are within arms reach. There are always little timbits of information in them that I use when writing a story on a university. I am still working on getting to know all the campuses and universities in Canada, so it is my crutch at the present time. 22'' nice, I am considering adding another screen to my setup.
