48 units limit in Level 1
Hi i'm wondering what happens if you take more than 48 level 1 units? Do they omit some credits from your CA or will solar not let you register? And what if unit number 51 for a first year course was for a course that is required but you put off? Thanks

I can't help you myself, but I think the best person to ask all those questions would be your faculty advisor.

It obivously won't let you register.
And if somehow you required that course, you would be allowed to take it. But you may have to talk to an academic advisor.

I am also curious about this.

My degree has 18 units of required level one courses, plus 3 units of calc. In order to apply to American med schools I also need the following: 6 units of Biology, 6 Units of Chemistry (+3 because I must take Chem 1RO3), 6 Units of Physics and 6 Units of English. This is exactly 48 courses. However, I desperately want to take Italian. If I do this however I can't do one of the med school pre-requisites. Doing the actual work is no problem if I overload during next summer, just the regulation.

Does anyone know: 1) If there are any upper level English Classes that can be taken without year one English 2) If getting a letter of Permission to take online courses at Waterloo will let me take the English Courses through that pathway (they don't apply to CA, but you still technically get credit) or 3) If there is any way to get this restriction waived in tight circumstances such as this, even if one course didn't apply to my CA. (I am really NOT trying to pad my grades. US med schools just want a VERY well rounded individual.)

There are a few (I can think offhand of 4) year 2 and 3 english courses open to students of all levels year II and above. and i thought Italian was a second year course...

Unfortunately, while there's both a 1A03/1AA3 Intermediate Italian and a 2Z03/2ZZ3 Intermediate Italian, if you took Grade 12 Italian in High School (as I did) you are in the Level one course, while if you took Beginners Italian in University 1Z03/1ZZ3 you are in the Level two course. This is of course if the course calendar is completely reliable (should I phone the University to check vital information from it and not assume it always gives the entire story?)

But thank you for the helpful response.

You could always take it during the summer if you really want to. It may be offered in the second summer term.

On an off topic note, I've heard the Italian courses are pretty crap at mac. Apparently the professor barely speaks Italian :s. Just what I heard though, through a Health Sci.
