Well it depends on what you're doing.
If you're overloading, it doesn't matter, you'll still meet all your other requirements, you'll just be giving yourself a bit more work.
If you're taking a 6 unit elective rather than a 3 unit elective + a required course, you have to be really careful since you will eventually need that required course to graduate in your program, and if that course is a pre-requisite to other courses, you may be screwed. Be very careful about putting required courses on the back burner.
