Admission Average for Computer Science?
Hi I am a current grade 12 applicant to McMaster for Computer Science and I was wondering what a "realistic" mark would be to have a good chance of getting into their computer science program.

The listed admission average is low 80s, but I've heard horror stories of people who were rejected with 85s.

For example, if my current average is an 80 for first semester final but only one of the classes in first semester (english) is actually on their preqs (and i have a 92 in that), if i manage to do well in second semester and get a 90 average in the preqs that they look for, would my chances of getting in be slim as i already missed out on early-acceptances, or will i get have a good chance in their acceptances in april-may?

Thanks, I appreciate your help!

Hi,

My top 6 average when I was applying to university was around 85%. So, I'm assuming you should be fine if your average is around there. No one will can tell you if you have a good chance or not really..just do your best and hope for the best!

Good luck,

Humza

Thanks for your reply! Do you happen by any chance to know when Mac sends most of their acceptances for CS?

thank you SOOO MUCH....I've literally havent slept in the past week from worrying that my bad chemistry mark (81) would ruin my chances at admissions because mac wouldnt get to see my second semester midterms before all the computer science spots are filled up. I know I can at least get a 90 average in second semester (with calc, physics, computer studies and philosophy) and my 80 average in first semester was just because of a medical issue that has thankfully gotten under control! Thanks guys so much for your help...I can actually enjoy Christmas now! Cheers! =D

My Grade 12 average was just about 80 among my top 6 - maybe 82 or something. I didn't receive my acceptance until early or mid spring either. If you pull off a mid-80 you should be fine.

You need low 80s this year to get into computer science, if you get an 85% you will get in for sure!

http://future.mcmaster.ca/admission/...n-requirements

Under "My Province/Territory:" select Ontario, and under "I want to apply to:" select computer science. If you get 82/83 you will probably get in, just aim for an 85 to be on the safe side.

You should be fine with a mid 85. Also, I don't think they only consider your grades in prereqs. Its the overall they look at, so your top 6 for that matter. Also, the "low 80" average they have listed, is tentative and subject to change based on how many students apply and their respective averages(that's what I was told when I called in to check).

I think they're letting fewer people in this year. Not sure why, we should increase acceptances since only about half actually seem to make it through.

So an average around 85 should be a pretty good bet of getting in to computer science this year, or is it closer to 90?

No one can tell you for sure..it varies each year..
Just aim for the highest you realistically can and like I said before, hope for the best.
