American Journalist Equates Canadians with the Nazi Regime
Check it out Mac! We're all Nazis for showing Canadian pride!

According to Texan journalist Gil LeBreton our display of patriotism at the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games is on the same playing field as the 1936 Olympics held by the Nazi regime in Germany! Check out the article here ...what do you think? Is it wrong to compare any peaceful country with Nazis? Does he have any valid points or is he just ignorant?

I don't have time to read the article right now. Is he referring to the opening or closing ceremonies?

For the opening ceremonies - those are supposed to be about the host country!
For the closing ceremonies - those were humourous and referring to all the stereotypes people from other countries have about Canada!

God forbid we have pride in our country and our athletes! I think it's only fair that the stadiums were filled with mostly Canadians. We're the frickin host country. Sounds like someone is a little jealous that we won more golds than the US. It's a sad day when being proud of your nation means being a Nazi. This guy is pathetic.

He's referring to the games in general and the Canadian media surrounding the games.

Yeah, you might want to read the article.

"One thing I never saw: a simple flag or shirt with the five Olympic rings. Not anywhere. After 15 Olympics, that was a first.

I didn't attend the '36 Olympics, but I've seen the pictures. Swastikas everywhere.

No political reference is meant, just an Olympic one. What on earth were the Canadians thinking?"

I think it's completely stupid to compare canadian patriotism to Nazi symbols. We're proud of our culture, and throw up maple leaves to show it. The Nazis, on the other hand, threw swastikas around to remind the people who was in charge. Quite a difference.

It makes me wonder what this guys political affiliations are. Many americans paint canada as a fascist country, because of our socialist policies, like health care. If this guy is anti-health care reform (a big issue in the states right now), he's probably just stirring the socialism pot to help his cause. If that's not the case, he just sounds like an idiot.

If you haven't seen this, you really should. It was aired on NBC during the olympics and it almost brought me to tears. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bV_041oYDjg

I think the funniest thing I've ever seen was NBC during the opening ceremonies.

For CTV, when each country walked in, there was a little map of the world with that country highlighted.

For NBC, when each country walked in, there was a little map of the world zoomed in on the US, then zoomed out from the (highlighted) US and zoomed into the other country. Apparently Americans only know where other countries are in relation to the US?

He is pretty out of touch with america because he obviously hasn't seen people in American Flag pants or rhinestone bald eagle jean jackets.

This guy is obviously a jackass. No question about it. But it's important to remember the way we talk about America isn't always the most flattering either. And don't say "Well look at the things they say about us", because that's a pretty stupid way of escalating tensions quickly.

A few years ago I was at Darien Lake for May 24. Of course, it was probably 90% Canadians there, because it isn't a long weekend in the States. One night we went and watched the laser show. They did a 5-minute tribute to Canada, which was pretty hospitable of them in my opinion. Then, they started a tribute to the U.S.A., and the audience booed. I have never been more ashamed to be Canadian than that night. Be conscious of the way you talk about them as well, because one day you might be published, and end up looking like a jackass too.

I think its a bit of a stretch to summarize the article as the thread title you've chosen.

Anyway, America is much more nationalistic than Canada.. they're just sad they didn't own the podium in terms of gold and they cope by slandering other people/countries/cultures.
