@jhan: Yeah, that is indeed how unlocked phones work but how much is ChatR charging for their sim cards? At Wind it used to be free but I think they're $10 now.

You have to pay for the SIM card, not sure how much though it doesn't say... all it says is:

Yes. We’d love to have you on chatr! All you have to do is purchase a chatr wireless SIM card from any chatr location.

Most places it is $9.99 or $10 for the SIM Card

I just signed up for chatr a week and a half ago. The SIM card is $10. Any GSM phone will work, and that's why I went with them. Didn't want to give up my current phone for an AWS network one. Do be mindful that at the moment, not everything will work on chatr - this could change in the future. I couldn't receive a photo message yesterday, and I am unable to send SMS to Facebook (32665) or Twitter (21212) numbers.

Otherwise, it's been great and I'm gonna stick with them for some time to come.

Well, people should know that they shouldn't expect crazy features with "dollar store" companies. ChatR is supposed to be entirely on Talk and Text and I wouldn't expect it to be just the basics of talk and text. So no video talking, no picture/video messaging, etc...

how does chatr work? I'm a complete noob when it comes to cell phones
Is it like rogers/bell so you would go up to their store and ask to start up a plan?
Is it like contract base like rogers/bell?
How does the sim card come in to this?

1.) No Telus.
2.) No Contracts.
3.) It creates a problem with long distance that I specifically switched to Chatr for.
4.) It's not any cheaper. I might as well have kept my Fido prepaid and just text and not talk.
5.) ...
6.) No Telus.

If you have an unlocked GSM phone, you should be good to go for Chatr. I got mine activated on the spot at one of their kiosks at Vaughan Mills mall. Pretty painless.

You make having telus a bad thing. I bet a retentions plan on telus will own any monthly plan on any other provider. Also, contracts arnt bad - it gives you more room for negotiation and if you are happy with the features, you are usually saving more $

Ah retention plans, speaking about those, has anyone gotten a retention plan from Virgin or any sort of deal?

Rogers also has pretty good retention plans, or they used to anyways. My brother is still using his retention plan from like 7 years ago. I forget all the specs, but it's not something you can get anymore.
