It depends what you plan on doing with it, and how heavy your computing requirements are. You cannot recommend the same "best dell" to a granny and an extreme gamer. It doesn't work like that. Specify exactly your computing requirements, and go from there.

Inspiron, probably. I think it's the most common/good for the "average student" that does not game heavily.
You can choose the 6-cell rather than the 3-cell for better battery life, OR you could just try to sit near the edges of lecture halls where there might be electric plugs. Of course, some lecture halls lack plugs as a whole...

I have an XPS, which I've mentioned in other laptop threads.. and it's amazing. Extremely powerful, long battery life, super thin and light, nice sized screen that isn't too small, and has a finger print reader to impress friends haha
See models here.

Just curious, but what specific model do you have? A while back I was thinking of getting the xps m1530, but lately I've shifted my focus to the studio 15 and just upgrade the components I want.

I have an XPS. It's alright. I still wouldn't ever buy Dell again though.

I build my own desktops (a lot cheaper and way better). My friend and I built ourselves some insane "top of the line" gaming Quad Cores for like 1/5th of the price of what Dell would charge you.
For laptops, I'd either buy a Macbook Pro (Never had any problems with mine), or if I wanted a cheap laptop, an Acer.
And if you fall into that awkward group of people who thinks a laptop is an awesome gaming machine.....get an alienware.

I've heard bad things about the Inspiron. My roommates randomly crashed after only a half semester of use. My other friends' ones kept freezing or crashing too.
I dunno, I personally prefer the Macbook. And, like other people said, it depends on what you're gonna use the laptop for.

From what I've heard, Dell has awful customer service. :| If something happens to your laptop, they blame you even if it's the fault of the manufacturer.

I have a Dell XPS420 desktop and have no complaints. It is a good PC for Autocad, various 3D cad programs, processing CFD simulations, casual gaming (DCS:BS and FSX), and general stuff like internet and word/excel. The price was fair too.
With Dell PC's you can't concretely group them by the product line (Inspiron, XPS, etc) as you are free to configure the computer yourself. In some cases, it is possible to configure a lower product line base model to equal specifications as a higher product line (and some times cheaper too). The only difference is how the case looks.
Similarly to the point above, you can't generalize as an earlier poster did and say "inspirons are bad". Especially not because of what is likely a software issue.
Building your own PC is a fun option, but be aware that it may cost you much more if you don't have access to bulk pricing for hardware components.
And yes, dell customer service blows. Not an issue if you knwo how to fix things yourself. If you don't... you may want to take that into consideration.

I agree, I have the cheapest Inspiron and the Harddrive just died after 4-5 months. But they did send a new one within 5 days without asking alot of questions. But maybe its because I bought it without considering the 1Gig ram but its horribly slow and painful to run, You cannot operate with Ms Office and a browser open at the same time! Assuming also that the numerous times I've knocked it around and dropped it haven't affected it
But I've had much better expereinces with Dimension and XPS desktops, those things have lasted long without hitches(Especially in the hot and dusty Pakistani climate)
