Molecular bio and Biotech with Dr. Xu
class: its a good idea to go to the lectures bcause while Dr. Zu posts the slides, they are most often a picture which he explains or expands on in class. also he expects that if you see a figure than the section in the text attached to that figure is pretty much fair game for testing. so you Must get/read the text for this class and stay on top of the chapters this is mainly what causes the difficulty. the amount of work is rather extensive not so much the material itself.
of note: some find Dr. Zu's accent to be troublesome, I found that as long as you pay attention its not really an issue. I know some that skipped class because they didnt feel it was worth it due to difficulty understanding though so I thought I'd mention it.
labs: overall labs were fun and tended to be fast, leaving early is not uncommon, though you will need to return multiple times to check on your cultures. 1 formal write up and the others are just a fill in sheet due the next day.
Material: very interesting, second half is more so because in the fist bit they are setting groundwork. of note: topics are very loosely related as thsi class covers many different aspects related to bacteria, archea and the technologies related/employing them. its spit up well overall but dont expect great flow between classes.
Tests: both mc and sa be prepared for tiny details to be tested and make sure to know definitions that are in the notes as there is a definition section in the sa.
Dr. Zu does a review before the exam which was very useful for the sa on the exam so I would recommend attending
also: Dr. Zu gave multiple opportunites for bonus marks through the year so thats another reason to attend lecture as you may not otherwise know of/ be able to get these marks elsewise.
