BIO1A03 lab help?
I didn't want to resort to this, but I'm really stuck between a rock and a hard place on this lab.
It's the formal electrophoresis one. I'm writing the introduction, but I don't really see the purpose of the lab. that is.. I don't know what it is we're trying to prove by measuring the fragment lengths? in chemistry we have a set purpose given to us, but this lab just seems so vague.
can anyone enlighten me? x(

You can determine whether the DNA is in circular or linear form (or both) based on the length of the fragments.
There was also something about constructing a semilog graph of distance traveled versus fragment length.
(obviously I don't remember this lab too well)

that's all I've been able to infer as well (the circular/linear thing). x(
thanks.

Yeah... there really isn't much to that lab (as far as I recall anyways.)
Best of luck to you.

We had to do the lab where you kill e. coli/m. luteus with the substance of your choice as our formal. You have a much harder write-up than we had..

seems like that one would be more work though, cause you have to come in the next day to take observations and such?

oh... ugh. x( well, as long as the due dates aren't the next day at 1pm, should be reasonable.

We finished in no time on the first day, so it wasn't much of a problem to come in for 10 minutes the next day to take results.

Random pointless fact: The velocity at which the strands travel (and hence how far they go) in the agarose gel, is based on "how knotted" the strands are. There's a knot invariant known as the "Crossing Number" that dictates this behaviour. (This is one of the things I'm reading about for my thesis)

Mowicz for president! We need a leader who can see individuals the way they really are; topologically equivalent to timbits (I realised how seemingly inappropriate this remark could get, and am thus not commenting on the 'discontinuity' count)
