Business students' minor?
Hi everyone,
Since I am a 1st year business student, I am wondering what fields I can minor? Say, can I minor English or sociology?
Thanks in advance!

You can minor in basically anything. Sociology and English are fair game. The majority of commerce students minor in economics though.

I think you can minor in pretty much anything, as long as you have the prereqs.

It depends on why you're minoring though. If it's for fun, then go ahead and minor in English or Sociology. But if you want one that fits best with your degree, that might take some time to think about. Business goes well with commerce/economics, or even labour studies. I'm not sure if having a major in business and a minor in linguisitics is going to put you ahead of anyone else when you graduate, you know?

Thanks a lot!
in fact, i don't really want to minor in something that is similar with business. I know it is a little bit weird. :p
By the way, what do you mean by saying "if you want one that fits best with your degree, that might take some time to think about"?

Thanks very much!
I know it will be absolutely fine to minor in eco for a business student. But I do want to try something that is not that similar with business.

Kathy means:

If you're looking to complete a minor purely out of interest, then you can go ahead and do whatever you'd like to.

But you should be cautioned that since English doesn't really 'help' your commerce background in any way, it won't give you an edge when it comes down to getting a job. If your goal is 'extra qualifications' or to differentiate yourself from the pack, then you need to think carefully about what your goals are and make an informed decision. For instance, an economics or math background (depending on where you'd like to work) can increase your chances of being recognized as valuable by a potential employer.

A lot of us commies are trying to complete a minor in economics

But I'm sure there are some out there that prefers to minor in different subjects like Sociology for some reasons. I don't really think your minor matters. In my marketing class last year, a speaker came in and she was a Commerce grad with a Sociology minor and she's working at Mattel.

I would actually think it might be advantageous to seek a minor that's not similar to business. It would demonstrate that you are a well rounded candidate for a job, which is especially helpful considering the emphasis corporations are putting on so called "soft skills" these days.
Also it could give you a leg up if you apply for a position related to your minor. (ie: minor in computer science might help you get a management job at RIM or google)

Also, it's true that alot of people are seeking economics minors, but I'm not so sure its really such a leg up to these degrees. Economics is practically just another specialization in business, like marketing accounting or finance, so I don't see how specializing in marketing with a minor in econ is much better than specialising marketing with a few courses in finance.
It seems like a lot of people are getting the econ minor just for the heck of it, under the assumption that its a really great add-on to the degree, but I don't believe it's necesarily more valuable than having taken three courses in some other non-business related field.

Thanks a lot.Your analysis really matches what I think about the minors. Moreover, I think just learning business and eco (stuff that are similar to business) cannot improve or enhance my writing skills or stimulate me to think in another way( guess this thought is a little bit weird to someone ).

As someone in Math, I definitely appreciate the importance of 'thinking outside the box' or 'approaching a problem in various ways.'

Though this is the case, and a valuable asset in academia (ie. I'm pursuing a doctorate), in the so-called "real world" this quality may be overlooked...just be careful and make sure you plan accordingly. (:
