Engineering + Business Minor
Hey,
I'm entering Engineering in the fall and I was wondering how difficult it would be to graduate with a minor in business. I've considered doing Engineering Management, but I've read in another thread that it isn't as valuable as completing engineering with a business minor yet you take nearly all the same courses. I could be wrong on that, as it is just what I've heard. Any advice on the subject?
Thanks.

Being an undergraduate myself, I'm not sure how employers see different degrees, but I can try to tell you what I think or what I've heard.

Going into Eng and Management does indeed involve you taking all the courses required for a Business minor, and then some. The degree is exactly as it sounds: Engineering with a heavy emphasis on management. One possible disadvantage to it from an employee standpoint is that it may not be as recognised by employers.

A Business minor, on the other hand, requires fewer courses and is generally easier to obtain (unless you try to do it in four years. Most engineering students who try to minor in something spread their work out over five years, usually by doing Society like myself though it's not necessary). It also has the advantage of being universally recognized, though an employer who does know about the Management program should recognize that it's much harder to obtain.

So in terms of value, I think it really depends on whether your employer's heard of Management at all, and if not, then if you'll have the opportunity to explain the details to him/her.
