If I have a negative balance on my student account, can I use it directly to purchase food on campus? ie just swipe my student card at the counter. Or does the money need to be transferred somewhere before I can use it for food?

Your student account is different than your Meal Plan account. If you log in to your account here http://mealcard.mcmaster.ca/acctnfo.htm then you can add money to your meal plan
