Calculating Variance using our calculators
Hey,
I wanted to know if we can use our calculators (Casio Fx-991MS) to calculate variance.
Does anyone know? Could you please tell me. It would be a great help.
Thank you

i THINK i figured it out...

first, press 'mode' twice, and then press 1 to select SD mode.

then, to clear memory, press [shift] then [clr] then [1].

if, for example, you want to calculate the standard deviation of 1003, 1005, 1010, 1008, and 1014, then you would:

type in 1003, then [M+]
type in 1005, then [M+]
type in 1010, then [M+]
type in 1008, then [M+]
type in 1014, then [M+]

Then, press [shift] then [s-var] (which is the [2] button), then press [3] to select that you want sample standard deviation (divided by n-1) instead of divided by n.

Then, press [=] and you get your standard deviation, which in this case should be 4.301162634. Square it to get sample variance.

Hope that works!

Bobert, Kira all say thanks to nerual for this post.

Awesome. Works great. I was looking through my manual and couldn't get it to work.

Thanks so much for the step by step Lauren.

Aha, yeah. The first time I did it I pressed Shift then M+, but I realized shortly after than because DT isn't in those half square brackets you shouldn't press shift.
