sqrt(-1) = i, which the standard imaginary unit. So the joke is the other numbers can't see the sqrt(-1) because its "imaginary." Read more about complex numbers here:

Yeah, I get the square root part, but is there any reason why only 8 can see it?

i think it's supposed to be 8's imaginary friend. 8 isn't special, just someone has to be the crazy one

I barely recall ever being formally taught the concept of imaginary numbers.

Seriously, I think the teacher spent all of 30 seconds on it and then I remember being assigned all the questions that didn't deal with them back in high school.
Either my memory is shot, my teacher was just too lazy to go into detail, or my school board was trying to phase it out of the curriculum or something...
