MATH 1Z04: Good News!
Today in Childs' morning lecture he announced that since the tests have been harder than previous years and that students have not been getting the 65-70% expected class average that has existed in the past, marks will be adjusted accordingly at the end of the year.
So for example if you score an average of about 53-55% your mark will be adjusted to a range of 65-70%.
Cheers

Unlikely, the high school curriculum changed recently, and so the university did accordingly too.
Don't insult your classmates. We all work hard and being told we suck isn't a very nice thing to do in response to our hard work.

Flaming your peers isn't a good way of making friends, and is against the Terms of Service. It is a good idea to read it before you post on the forums.
Have a nice day.

people do not "suck" this year, infact they are putting forth a pretty good effort, and i would know, as i am one of the ones who help tutor those individuals in the math help center. you guys just have to learn to calm down on midterms, this is ur first year yes, so it will take u time to get accustomed to the midterm structure of university, but once yah develop the rthym of the problems, u'll be able to solve anything

This is all assuming that the average stays that low...
Of course, considering the course isn't getting any easier, I seriously doubt the average will jump up.

Comon now, don't take things you read on the internet so seriously. I'm not doing as well as I want either, so I totally understand.
Anyways, did he say anything about how the marks would be adjusted? Like would it be the same for everyone? How about the people who range in the 90s? It wouldn't exactly be fair for everyone unless they had their marks adjusted so that it would be over 100%.

He did say that if, for instance, you had a 90% and the marks were increased by 11%, it would act like an odometer and roll back over to just 1%...
In all seriousness though, I would think that there's a diminishing return here: if you already have a high mark, you won't be adjusted as much as if you had a low mark.
Does anyone know how they usually do stuff like this?

We had a similar situation happen in HTH 1H06 (Nursing Anatomy/Physio)... the average for our midterm was a 48%.... so they bumped us up by 5%.

Dr. Childs said that everyone's marks will be adjusted the same way, so if they add 15%, everyone gets that. Other courses might be different, but that's just what I recall from the lecture.

Would that mean if you get a 86% in the course, you would get 101% ? O_O
Is there a cap of 100% at McMaster? Just wondering.

You would be getting an adjustment on your test grade. They don't bellcurve final grades.
Theoretically yes, you can get over 100%. But that would just equate to a 12/A+ on Mac's scale.

Talking about the grade system... let's say you get 95% on a course, would McMaster consider that a 12 or a 11.5 on the transcript?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the only time decimal grade points are used is when looking at cumulative or sessional averages...not for individual course marks.
So 95% would be a 12.
