I fully intend to consult my faculty office but thought I'd throw it out to you too!

Very few uppper year courses are offered in the summer. Now if I got a letter of permission and took a course that's similar to say a 3RD YEAR Mac course at another Uni over the summer or online eg. Athabasca Uni., could I use those credits towards meeting the requirements for my Mac degree?

That totally depends on the course and the institution, it can be done but just because the courses seem similar by description doesn't mean Mac will accept the credit transfer. I don't think any of us on MacInsiders would be qualified to tell you yes or no, esp since you mention online courses. I'm not sure if things work the same way with online courses as they do if you attend a class at say UofT. Check with your faculty for sure.

Yes you can, as long as you get your Letter of Permission approved.

I don't think your mark in the class will count toward's your Mac GPA though, only the credits.

Do you happen to know anything else concerning letters of permission? Just wondering about some of the restrictions concerning approvals? I'm trying to get permission to take a fourth year seminar that is identical to one being offered at York this summer in order to finish my degree. I'm definitely going to see my department this Monday but just wondering in the mean time

The deciding factor for letters of permission is the head of the program in which the course is offered. i.e. if you're taking a philosophy course elsewhere, you'd need to consult the undergrad head of philosophy here.

Other than that...it's sort of up in the air. Some people require written explanations for how the classes are the same. Other programs have an approved course list.

Thanks for your quick reply!

The course is a Political Science course. The description in the York calendar matches the McMaster course description. I was just concerned with being approved with a 4th year course and if GPA has any influence on the decision.

I don't know how they would look at seminar classes, to be honest. It may be more difficult to be given permission, though I'm not entirely positive.

I thought so too but was hoping otherwise. Thanks for all your replies. I'll have to wait until tomorrow to find out
