That means that if the guy straightens up in prison, there is a possibility he could get part of his life back or have another chance at killing more.

In this case, he would not be a problem anymore with the death sentence

As for if there is a single shooting or without VERY extensive evidence, the death sentence should not be enacted since there may be an extremely tiny chance that this is the wrong person, or the intentions to kill were not there but was an accident. If there is any chance it is not the right person, it should be off the table
Agree that the death penalty should only be for extreme cases. And the Canadian judicial system is bull**** with the whole life sentence being only 25 years... I didnt know we were living in the movie "In Time" where you only have 25 years to live before you clock starts running out. Its sad really. As to this whole death sentence and making mistakes, Surely it would only be invoked if substantial, undeniable evidence were provided to leave no doubt that the accussed is the right person.
And to everyone saying that killing someone wont bring back the person you lost, your right it wont, but it would make me a lot happier knowing that the murderer faced the same fate that he brought onto his victims.

Well funded? To which prisons are you referring?

You would be hard-pressed to find a well-run institution under the U.S. federal prison system. Third-party companies manage a large number of them, which enables the standard of living conditions to slip even further down without governmental intervention. You should see the prison tours- it is terrifying.

Besides, when was the role of a prison to punish, rather than rehabilitate?

In response to the topic of the thread: any criminology major could assure you that the death penalty has never been an effective means of deterrence. The only reason for its continuing support in about sixty states worldwide is to fulfill society's desire for bloody retribution.
