CHEM 2OC3&2OD3 in comparision to 2OA3&2OB3
Hey, I was just wondering if anybody knew what difference between the 2OC3&2OD3 chem classes were in comparision to 2OA3&2OB3? I seems that they are essentially the same type of classes, just 2OC3&2OD3 do not have a lab and the other ones do.
I just want to know if they differ in material and what disadvantages are there to taking the courses without the lab.

CHEM 2OC3 and 2OD3 are designed for honours chemists. I took them both this year and in talking to people who took the other stream, the two cover mostly the same chapters but 2OC3 and 2OD3 go more in depth and focus more on the pure chemistry (especially in aromaticity) while 2OA3 and 2OB3 focus more on biological aspects (like carbohydrates and proteins).
2OC3 and 2OD3 don't have a lab because it's expected that you're enrolled in honours chemistry and have 2 mandatory four hour labs per week, some of which are organic chemistry labs.

Well i'm registered in Honours Life Sci level 2 this year and i just find chem interesting especially if it doesn't have labs lol. However, I might be thinking of switching in to Honours Chemistry, so would taking 2OC3&2OD3 be a disservice to me?

It might be a disservice because you wouldn't be doing the labs associated with it. The 2OA3/2OB3 labs are pretty chill, and very easy marks. As far as labs go, they're pretty great, so I wouldn't discount 2OA3/2OB3 just because of the labs.
If you're thinking of switching into chem, you should contact the undergrad advisor ( [email protected] master.ca) and ask which orgos they would prefer. Even though 2OC3/2OD3 are the chem orgos, they might want you to take the other ones so that you get the lab component.

If you're trying to switch into Honours Chemistry or if you generally like pure chemistry I'd recommend taking 2OC3 and 2OD3. The professors are really passionate about the material which really helps.
Also, if you're serious about switching, I'd do it sooner rather than later. There are quite a few required courses that I think you can take if you're not in the program (I think), but not many Life Sci courses transfer over to my knowledge.

The average was pretty low (I've heard everything from mid-30% to high 50%), although I didn't find it that bad. Then again, I thought the 2OB3 exam was brutal, but the average was mid-60s iirc.
The 2OA3 exam was fine if you knew everything (there was just a lot to know), whereas the 2OB3 exam threw tricks at us. Damn tropine...

I would definitely consider 2OA3/2OB3 since the labs are easy marks and they can boost your overall average. 2OB3 exam was pretty challenging...eventho ugh orgo isn't very easy for most people, they are the most interesting courses i have ever taken..again, some people may disagree depending on their interest..i believe Capretta is teaching the second orgo so u guys gonna have a lot of fun

How did you guys end up doing in the course anyways?
i understand that the labs are easy but there only worth 20% so if the exam is pretty hard and it 50% I don't see it how you could do really well

Well when you think about it Chem 1A03/1AA3, the exam was worth 45%, if I remember correctly. So, that 5% doesn't seem like too much of a change.. I hope so anyway.

I know people who failed and people who got 12. It really all depends how much work you put into it.

If u put the time for the first orgo and work really hard, you re more likely to do better on the 2nd one and it would even be less time consuming..
