As far as I know, it's so that the Housing & Conference Service staff get a Christmas break too. Students aren't allowed to live in residence buildings without Residence Managers and CAs, so if residences were open for Christmas break, staff would have to stay too.

I think the Off Camus housing centre offers a program where off-campus students let international students and others who can't go home for the holidays 'sublet' (not sure if its free or not) their rooms for the break. I lived/worked on res for two years and to date I haven't heard of anyone just being stranded without anywhere to go.

for the international kids
who don't really know anyone


but then again i guess a lot of them
go back to their countries of origin for
christmas break

For 15 days? Sorry man but $1000 return ticket for 15 days doesn't sound cost-effective to me. $150-$300 sublet is waaay cheaper. I know I'd have chosen that last year if I didn't have a cousin in 'sauga.

so I heard classes start the 3rd..

but isnt that a legal holiday..

The stat holiday was changed by Mcmaster to Dec 31st instead of Jan 3rd.

In Hamilton McMaster students are not the only onrs that go back on January 3rd, 2011, Hamilton District School Board Elementry and Secondary School students go back that day to.

True, but they've been done since the 17th, so their break is still a good two weeks!
