Classes start on Tuesday January 3rd 2012, not January 2nd!
I was talking to a few friends and everyone was under the impression classes start on Monday January 2nd, but according to McMaster's Sessional dates it says classes resume on the 3rd. This is just a friendly reminder for those who didn't know.

Also, residences on campus open on Monday, January 2nd at 7am, so don't bother moving back in on Sunday because they will be closed.

I had a different experience, where everyone thought we were starting on the 9th, and I had to correct them saying it was the 3rd instead :(

During exam month, I've been telling people that 2nd sem starts on Jan 2. Then after I got an email from OSAP pick up and looked through the this year's undergrad calendar, I saw it starts on the 3rd then I was like "Oh it's starts on the 3rd. That's good then we don't have to come back right after new years day."

That's so silly. Either do the Monday or the Thursday (matching Semester 1).

It usually is Monday, but since this year Monday is a public holiday there are no classes.

I could be wrong about this but don't other schools have a much shorter exam period.

And if so, isn't it worth it to have more days between exams in exchange for a shorter break. In my opinion it is.

While I agree with the frequent, "We get more for what we pay" by the time you hit 3rd year in most heavy programs, having more breaks is really beneficial to preventing students from burning out. Most people work, do research or volunteer extensively in the summer because they want to develop good career skills from first year, and having an extra reading week in the long run would not be as terrible.
