Commerce and electives
Hey everyone, I'm just wondering if there's any way to take Media 1A03 as a Commerce student.
It says you can take any of the humanities courses except for the Media ones.

Can I email admissions and ask for a special request or something? I think that this course would benefit me more than taking a different elective.

You can take MMEDIA 1A03 as an elective (I took it). It just won't count towards the cross cultural requirement.

So ''The menu for 2012-2013 is as follows:

All Anthropology courses except ANTHROP 1AA3 or 1AB3 if completed as part of the Business I requirements.
All courses in the Faculty of Humanities open to Commerce students, with the exception of all Multimedia courses, PHILOS 2N03 and English courses other than those listed below.
All Indigenous Studies courses
All Political Science courses, except POL SCI 1G06, 3F03, 3FF3, 3S03, 4O06
All Religious Studies courses except RELIG ST 1B06 if completed as part of the Business I requirements''
, only applies to the ''International/Cross-Cultural/Language Menu'' ?

Yes, as a commerce student you need to complete two courses from this list. Just because it says Multimedia doesn't count doesn't mean that you can't take it at all. It just means that you still need to take two of the cross cultural courses to satisfy the requirement.

Also, the cross cultural list for 2013-2014 (which is a bit different than the 2012-2013 list) can be found here: http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /CALEN...14/pg1185.html

You don't have (you have 4+ years to get them done) but it's best to get them done in first year so that you have more room for electives later on if you want to minor in something.

GEOG 1HA3 HUMAN GEOGRAPHIES: SOCIETY AND CULTURE (if not completed as part of the Business I requirements)

Is this saying if I didn't chose GEOG 1HA3 as a course from the List 1?

Yes. You need to take a social science elective in first-year from List 1 on this page: http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /CALEN...14/pg1188.html. What it's saying is that if you took a course other than GEGO 1HA3 to satisfy that requirement, GE0G 1HA3 would count as a cross cultural course. For example, if you took PSYCH 1X03 to satisfy the social science requirement, GE0G 1HA3 would count as a cross cultural course.

So I could take both the Geo's and 1 will count towards it? Correct?

I guess I'll get rid of the labour studies electives.

Wow, thanks for all the great answers! I've asked multiple people/staff and none of them could answer these questions for me.

So, how was the media course? Did you like it?

Also, is MEDIA1B03 allowed as well? And did you hear anything about it?

I found the course to be okay. The content was very easy but the assignments were confusing. There were 4 assignments and a culminating task. The assignments were very bizzare. For the first one, you had to go out and observe something in five states and then write a short reflection paper. While this may sound easy, there were very strict guidelines (ex. no movement of camera, no interaction with what you're observing, etc.). For the second, you had to form a group and develop a multimedia tool (there were very specific guidelines for this too - ex. spend less than $20). You also had to create and maintain a blog as you developed the tool. My group's blog is here: https://trinodproject.wordpre ss.com/. For the third assignment, you were given certain phrases and then had to use Photoshop to create a picture using just the letters that were in the phrase (this was really easy). For the fourth assignment, you had to use Processing (http://www.processing.org/) to develop a simple interactive program. It was a bit difficult to learn the basics of the language, but after reading a few tutorials it was actually interesting.

For the culminating task, there were almost no guidelines. Basically, we were told to create a multimedia project that reflected our understanding of one (or more) of the topics in the course (what is multimedia, creativity is not just for artists, design, and interactivity). My project is here: http://journeythroughthe.net /.

I don't know much about 1B03 other than people telling me that this course had no final exam (I don't know for sure though - that's just what I heard).

I think it's not offered this year. I checked the course listings for multimedia and 1B03 is no longer on the list: http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /CALEN...Multimedia.pdf
