Commerce internship program - recent students opinons?
Hi, Im currently in this program right now. I was wondering what is a good average to have, how Im doing so far in this process, and just to hear thoughts from recent people who secured internship.

CIP told us that last year there were 220 students in COMM 3IN0 (almost exactly the same this year), which needed a 6.5 average to be able to register. Of these 220 students who completed 3IN0, about 161 students remained eligible to continue onto the recruitment process in January and met the 7.0 cumalative average required by the end of their first semester of third year commerce (first semester of third year must mess people badd). Of the 161 students to who moved onto the recruitment process, 101 of them got an internship last year from about 211 postings. About half the students got their positions through rank and match and the other half through continuous recruitment.

My average right now is about a mid B, I got mostly Bs, some As , about 2 Cs and 1 D (for a dumb course but unfortunately its in third year ). My marks in accounting and finance are all in the Bs. So far in the first rank and match I got 3 interviews and 3 not selected for interivew . My professional experience is not that bad Id say I got some work experience related to the industry and still working part time right now. Im a paranoid person so I applied to almost 40 positions so far both posted for the commerce internship program on oscar plus and in external websites (some of these 40 positions are offering multiple positions so its actually a lot more than 40) .

Am I good so far in this process of getting an internship? im still waiting to hear from rest of the over 40 positions i applied for and interviews just started being offered last week with a lot of jobs closing this week but like i said im paranoida. The problem with the interviews i got is that 16- 20 others also got interviews for each of the three positions i got interviews for . I know they said that this year that they want to increase the number of students who get internship which is why they decided to do two rank and match and two continuous recruitment based on the feedback they got from employers and theyre gonna keep posting jobs until June. But still, I just wanted to know how worried I should be cause right now im like for applying to so many jobs. Is there anyone who got a similar average and experience as me get an internship particularly in the first round (cuz i dont want to continue this endleess applying in continuous recruitment and second round) and how many jobs did you apply for? I think im good compared to other people but still yo im paranoid. :vampire ::angr yhalloween::id ea:

I'm very curious too as to how the internship program will be work for each student. You have industry experience so I guess that could have made up for your lower average.

Are averages really that important after a certain extent? I am quite worried on another spectrum, where I have a 10.3 Average but I have no work experience at all other than some clubs so I'm not even sure if I will get a good job.

What is your take on this OP based on your peers in the program? Do students with high GPA's no work experience get jobs?

What I can tell you is that there are a lot of different kinds of postings. If you are the kind of person who is looking for a specific kind of posting, like say accounting at a big 4 firm then yeah competitions gonna be high and it will be harder to get an interview unless your accounting marks are legendary and your CA is really high (which it is compared to most people in the program . I would say marks compared to experience is more important for those kinds of jobs in that its higher that you will get an interview, but getting the job is another story because it will depend on well you do interview, how your competition ranks the employer, and how your experience compares to others. About these people with high marks and their experience, I dont know from what I can see the people with high marks are usually just accounting TAs they dont need to go out there to find work cause they are already distinguished by their TA status.

What I can see from my experience and the experience of others is that employers are interviewing a lot of people at once right now. I think the reason being is because we are in the rank and match phase. Basically what that means is employers are going to offer interviews to people and rank them according to how much they want them, they can rank from 1 to maximum 15 people for each position. Then employer rankings are gonna be released on February 20 for our first phase, students will either see rank "1" or just ranked "R" with no specific number. Thats the reason why it is important to get interviews because CIP told us that people with ranks as low as 5 got the job. Then students will rank, and be matched according to the lowest numerical combination. E.g. employer ranks students as #1, student ranks #1 win-win its a match D!! employer ranks student as 10, student ranks as 1 yo no one else here competition accept other positions its a match !! you been screwed employer rofl

The jobs I got interviews for though were Pricing specialist (finance), Supply chain analyst (supply chain), and Business analyst (i dont know this is probably finance or combo). The jobs i got rejected for are media planning assistant, digital marketing assistant, and a different business analyst job( it was all like you need a high average to apply a minimum B average lol apparently a B average is high so imagine what a 10 average would be ). I think i did not get those like media and marketing interviews just because I didnt have you know no experience related to that. I actually kind of get this feeling that marketing is high in competition this year when they asked whose going for marketing all of these people raised up there hand. And also I think because a lot of people screwed up last semester if they took 3qa3 (which messed wiith peoples minds last semester), 3Ab3 and 3Fa3 in the same semester. For marketing, i think you need related experience to get an interview. I think im lucky in the sense that I did not screw up finance because i know a lot of people are shatting themselves right now in commerce internship and those kicked out for screwing 3fa3 last semester and with deaves and they all be like im gonna do accounting or marketing!

However, I would say I would say most of the jobs posted though does not ask for a focus on anything but actually are quite general business. For example, Hydro One's got postings saying " Internship - Transmission and Distribution Settlements - Engineering or Business " and RBC's got " Junior Analyst, Technology and Operations, Operational Risk " and Toronto Hydro Corporation has got a bunch of these "PEY" job postings , professional experince year or some shat like that with no position title at all and like a generic job description same accross each of these positions. Celestica is hiring various positions and you look at their website they are hiring close to 25 interns for 12-16 month positions but i think they are also hiring from other schools and colleges also and cmon how many business schools actually offer 12-16 month internship and how many students will go for it if they have co-op for 4 months.

When they told the stats about the program I was surprised at how good it is now they are improving it and this year they want to improve it even more with the double rank and match phase plus double continuous recruitment. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

if anyone wants to answer my concern right now dont be shy go and answer

From experience and what ive heard, marks don't matter too much as long youre at least in the mid B range like you are. Resume/Cover letter and all that + interview skills are more important.

Unless your marks are super high (upper 10's) or super low they will not matter too much.

Loko says thanks to aurocks14 for this post.

Thanks man this really helps. I guess I'm just scared about my D even if it's for a kind of irrelevant course because you know it stands for so many bad things man I can name a few right now like douchebag dick dumshut dumass d ipshit dora da fack

Did you get an internship by any chance ? If you did maybe you can explain your process like How many jobs did you apply for ? How was rank and match ?
