If you're not in your room, it can be difficult for people to get a hold of you...and this can be really important when you're in another city and/or off campus.
Being lost without a cell phone sucks. As does waiting to meet people somewhere that isn't walking distance and they being really late...and not knowing if they're coming.
I use my cell as my primary phone when I'm in Hamilton. I have a $45/month plan from Virgin, which is free calling/texting to five numbers in Canada, 100 free texts a month, and 200 daytime minutes.
If you're worried about it costing you money without using it much, get a pre-paid plan a contract-free plan from Koodoo. Then you can change things around if you need to.
