Course Help - Social Sciences
I'm going into the Social Sciences and I plan on doing a double major in Social Work and Anthropology. I was planning on taking these courses, and I don't really know what to make of the whole situation. I want to know if anyone doing either Social Work or Anthro could let me know what they took and if these courses are what I need to take.

SOCIAL WORK 1A06
ANTHRO 1B03
ANTHRO 1A03
PHILOSOPHY 1E03
SOCIOLOGY 1A06
HISTORY 1M03
ENGLISH 1AA3
INQUIRY 1SS3

Hey, I'm in 4th year Anthro ^_^ always nice to see someone interested in majoring in it! I didn't take the Inquiry course or Anthro 1B03 (I took 1A03 and 1Z03). I think the courses you have are fine, I took a whole bunch of other Soc Sci courses (Psych, Health Studies) and some electives. I would suggest Anthro 1Z03 if you are looking into doing further studies in the physical Anthro side (there's a 3rd year Anthro course called Forensic Anthro that has 1Z03 as a prereq) but other than that...I think you're set. I didn't have a hard time with upper year required Anthro courses even though I didn't take 1B03.

Physical Anthro is more....biology-ish 1Z03 covers stuff like where first primates...where humans might have originated, evolution..stuff like that. I'm not sure if the material covered is the same as when I took it in first year!

One last question, I promise xD. Do you have to take courses like that? I'm really interested in the archaeology/mythology/cultural anthro courses. Can you specialize in that area of Anthropology or is it more broad then that?

You don't really have to, I think it's more of what you're interested in! I know a lot of people who like archaeology and cultural courses. Anthro doesn't exactly have a specialization (I'm not sure though if there's still a minor in archaeology, check the course calendar! That's the only exception and you'd have to take a bunch of Geo courses) most people in Anthro just choose which ever courses fall under the field they want (cultural/physical/archaeology). I've taken most of the archaeology/physical anthro courses and a few cultural ones. Feel free to PM me if you have questions about Anthro!

To get into social work you'll need either Social Work 1A06 or Sociology 1A06, plus 6 units of the following courses:
ANTHROP 1A03, 1B03, 1Z03
CMST 1A03 (1B03)
ECON 1B03, 1BB3
GEOG 1HA3, 1HB3
GERONTOL 1A03
HEALTHST 1A03
INDIG ST 1A03, 1AA3
INQUIRY 1SS3
LABR ST 1A03, 1C03, 1Z03
PEACE ST 1A03, 1B03
POL SCI 1G06
PSYCH 1AA3, 1A03, 1XX3, 1X03
RELIG ST 1B06, 1D06, 1E03, 1J03
SOC WORK 1A06
SOCIOL 1A06
WOMEN ST 1A03, 1AA3 (or 1A06)

So by looking at what you're taking, you're good to go. In first year most of the courses I took were on that list, but as long as you have at least six units you're fine. You'll also need to write the Social Work Admissions Test in March, but if you're taking Social Work 1A06 more info will be given about that later.

Is the test to get into Social Work hard? Do a lot of applicants not make it through? Not to say that this will make me change my mind about applying, but I just want to know what it takes to get in.

There is no way to study for the test. There are three essay questions. It examines personal suitability. The best advice I could give is to pay attention in Intro Social Work and be aware of the way you see the world. I'd also suggest to volunteer with people in any way. When it comes to admissions 50% is based on the test and the other 50% is based on your grades. 45 people get admitted into the four year BA/BSW program and 25 people get into the two year BSW second degree program. Hope that helps!

Wow that sounds tough, only 45 people accepted in the BA/BSW program. Thanks for your help

I know someone who's attempting to minor but I'm not sure if they took the interdisciplinary minor in archaeology out. People I know in my program who like archaeology just take all the archaeology classes.

Hey! I originally planned on majoring in social psychology, but now after thinking about it more and more, I believe that I want to major in Social Work too! (Depending on how first year goes and what I think of the courses, haha)
Anyway, I made a mock timetable, and the courses that I've got as of right now are:

INQ 1SS3
PSYCH 1X03
PSYCH 1XX3
SOC WORK 1A06
PHILO 1E03
BIO 1P03
SOCIO 1A06
HLTH AGE 1AA3

Any comments/advice?

I heard it's better to try to take Inquiry 1SS3 first semester (I did that in my mock timetable).
