To people who have taken this course: did you find the textbook useful? I'm looking to buy as few textbooks as possible this year lol.
Also, would you recommend taking Chem 2OB3 in summer school?

Definitely get the textbook. It's new this year, so I can't comment on it, but it's really useful for practice and for supplementary information to the lecture notes. I thought it helped me tie everything in together after reading the textbook.

the textbook wasn't that useful especially for practice problems (because the problems in the textbook are considered too easy). they post up a lot of old midterms and assignments. these are the best source of practice. i used the textbook for the first orgo because the notes sucked.
i took the second orgo in summer school and teri's notes were great, i barely opened the the textbook.
i would recommend taking it in the summer, because orgo is very time consuming, especially the second one. im not sure who is teaching it in the summer (it's not teri though, she moved to another school).

Dr Stover's teaching 2OA3 and Capretta's teaching 2OB3...do these profs have good enough lecture notes that I won't need the textbook?

It depends. I preferred learning from the textbook while using the notes as a guide what to study. Others prefer the notes.

Go to Titles and flip through the text and see if you find it useful. Inb4: "Well how will they know if its useful before going to class?" Sometimes, and just sometimes, you really do get a feel of the text before class starts. Like for one of my courses, I purchased the latest edition because just flipping through it confirmed that this style/layout worked best with my learning style. Others don't.
And email your prof/wait till the first day of class. The worst thing that will happen is you'll buy a text you will have to resell or buy a text you don't use. With 40 classes at University, that's bound to happen sooner or later. Better safe than not. Going to classes and doing practice problems is immensely helpful but sometimes a good textbook can give you the extra bump you need to really solidify things.

I had Stover for 2OA3 and opened the textbook 1-3 times during the semester. But I'm not a textbook person at all and learn exclusively from lecture materials and the internet.
