Course Selection/SOLAR Registration Help
Hi everyone,

I'm a first year Life Science student, and I'm just trying to finish up my course registration. However, I hate to admit it, bit I'm somewhat lost. Think any of you guys can guide me on the right track?

So far, I've already decided on the 8 required courses that I'm taking, and I still have to decide on my two electives. Then I tried to do the whole 'try and fit the times into your Timetable so you don't get any conflicts' thing, as seen under Steps 3 and 4 here, but this is where I got totally lost. I know the subject abbreviation and course code, but that's as far as it goes.

I went ahead and put the courses I'm sure about into SOLAR, as seen here:

As you see, I did it without any need for knowing the times or Section of each course. Any course that had a pre-requisite, I put it in term 2. And I put the pre-requisite in term 1. I also put SCIENCE 1A00 and HTH SCI 1BS0 in term 1.

Did I make any errors in what I did? Do I still need to map out my course times using the 2010 timetable worksheet? Or can I just choose me elective and add them into SOLAR?

Thanks
~SW

When I plugged all my courses into the Master Timetable ( https://adweb.cis.mcmaster.ca /mtt/ ), I found that my top 3 choices for electives all had major time conflicts with core courses that couldn't be moved.

So I'd recommend doing the same, and filling out a prospective time-table on your own. It's my understanding that SOLAR will let you choose anything you have the prerequisites for at this time and that you wouldn't find out about time conflicts until August when they release timetables.

So what exactly do I do with that Master Timetable? Just go and fill in the data for all my courses, compare the times and make sure none of them occur at the same time? And how exactly do I fill out a prospective timetable?

Yes.

Also, to make a timetable just use Excel. Use the Master Timetable to get the times of your courses and fill them in a generic timetable format.

Yeah. I put in my courses one by one, and wrote down all the different times when each course was available.

Then print out a timetable grid like the one in the PDF you linked (or just draw one on a blank piece of paper like I did, or use a spreadsheet program) and fit in all of your required courses going by the times they are available.

Your required courses shouldn't have any conflicts, and you'll have a timetable that shows when/where you can place your electives.

Okay so I have a timetable with the timeslots and the days of the week. Now when I go to any of the course's page in the Master Timetable, there are many different times for both the cores and the tutorials (sometimes more than one time for each day). Look at BIOLOGY 1M03 for example. Which time do I put down into my timetable?

So do I put down the times of one of the cores and all the tutorials? Or one core and one tutorial?

You are making a mock timetable, so you want to make an actual timetable. You'll only have 1 core, 1 lab and 1 tutorial per class. Putting more than that doesn't mean anything and will just confuse you.
