Do a lot of first years living in residence bring cars?
I'm bringing my car with me to rez and I went to a high school where most people had a car whether it was their parents, bought for them or bought it themselves. So I'm just wondering am I going to one of relatively few people to have a car or is it not too uncommon?

I'd say it's quite rare, almost no-one I knew on Res. had a car, but nobody in my high school had a car either so who knows.
If you're willing to pay for the parking then go ahead, being able to drive places could be useful.

It's not common at all. I only knew one person who had it in my 2 years in residence.

I only knew one kid in res with a car last year. Parking is expensive.

Get a parking spot in the far lots (M,N) if you need it you'll just have to take the campus bus, or walk for a couple mins, it worked for me. On the weekends or past 7ish on weekdays you can park anywhere on campus, with your transponder.
it comes to about 30-40$ a month, which is reasonable, considering that a parking spot in other universities can be really high.

I barely see an upside lmao. You have unlimited bussing throughout the year with your student card so why bother paying for gas, parking and insurance? It's spending money for something that's already included in your tuition lol

I'm bringing my car... It was a graduation present, why would i leave it sitting at home, and pay insurance on it if no ones using it?

You 'could' leave it sitting at home and not pay insurance for the eight months while you're away at school.

Public transit sucks! I want to be able to go where I want when I want in my own car. Not to mention to cancel and restart my insurance for summer is a real hassle with the extra fees. Also my insurance drops the longer I drive and cancelling for months at a time messes with that. I live an hour and a half away from res so it'll be useful to have a car to visit my family and friends back in my hometown every once in a while.

Expect people wanting you to make beer runs/liquor runs etc. :p I only knew 1 person with a car in residence, and he was always driving to pick up beer haha.

Having a car is almost pointless on campus, but it's decently useful of campus. I almost never left campus outside of weekends in first and second year (when I lived on res), but it was really nice to have a car in third year to go to resturants, buy groceries, visit friends, and travel back home. Still not really worth insurance + gas, but better than basically throwing money away having it on Res.
