Do profs follow the textbooks?
So I'm coming into Mac next year. haha, I know its really early to already start thinking about this, but i'll be busy just before uni starts, so I want to make sure I still do. I've been reevaluating my note taking style, and generally exploring different types. So I thought I could maybe take good notes from the textbook before each lecture, then listen to the prof during the lecture, and add details that they mention to it. But this works only if they do follow the textbook.

BTW the course i'm taking next year are :
LINGUIST 1A03, HTH SCI 1PA, PHYSICS 1L03, MATH 1LS3, BIOLOGY 1A03, BIOLOGY 1M03, PSYCH 1X03, PSYCH 1XX3, CHEM 1A03, and CHEM 1AA3 2D.

Yep lots of science and math!

Also loose leaf sheets and binder (also for handouts) or notebooks and binders for whatever handout might be given. And any other techniques you have found works really well.

Thanks in advance!!

This really varies by course and by professor. I've had profs who follow the textbook so closely that I regret reading it (e.g. Sociology 1A06) and others where I'm not entirely sure the professor has seen the textbook (e.g. Labour Studies 1A03).

Whatever method or format you choose, I strongly recommend drawing a vertical line about 3/4 across the page and using that for definitions, important notes (e.g. stars next to things the prof says will for sure will be on the exam), or context (things you remember from other lectures or classes that will help you remember what you're learning now).

Also: if you want to test out different notetaking methods, try using them while watching TED talks or other free lectures available online so you can find what works best for you.

Linguistics 1A03, for sure they follow the textbook but sometimes they add their own stuff too.

In my experience, most science and math courses at Mac don't follow the textbook, it's just there as reference. I didn't use the textbooks for most of those courses though - bio 1M03 was the only one I ever really looked at.

It's not like high school where you follow the textbook closely and the book was made with the curriculum in mind. Usually they give reference chapters but you can do just fine without them; the emphasis is on in-class material.

In terms of your electives, the health sci one doesn't even have a textbook (at least, it used to not have a textbook...not sure how one would be helpful considering the course format).
