There's probably no other way than trusting the person right? :(
You could also ask to see a screenshot of their list of courses on SOLAR, showing that they do have the course. But then, you would still have to trust that they intend to drop it.

Not really. I've never traded, but I've never heard of anyone getting scammed. The real danger is a random third person taking the course and screwing you guys up... you have to trade quickly and at an odd time.

Its best to do it at a random time like 4am. Also best to do it later on for example if Solar opened on Friday for some of you don't try trading courses until a few days after because people are constantly on solar during the first few days.
