I wanted to do research or work in a lab this coming summer and I remember reading some type back that positions of this type usually become available around January. Anyone know where I should be looking?

Thanks in advance : )

I was under the impression that many of these jobs get posted on OSCAR.
It's worth checking out.

Hi!
I've done research/lab work for two summers now, and there are a few different ways you can go aout applying for the jobs.

Depending on your faculty (science/engineering) and your grades you may be eligible for a research award from NSERC. I know for engineering, these applications come out around late Jan/early Feb but I'm not sure about other faculties. You need a supervior before you can send in your application so make sure you talk to your profs in advance...

Alternatively, if you're not eligible for this, you can talk to a professor whose research you're interested in and see if they're hiring summer students directly. They may ask you to apply on OSCAR or send a cover letter/resume directly to them.

Hope that helped! Good luck!

Research what profs in your department are researching. Read a few of their papers to figure out ifyou are interested in what they are doing. Then just email them asking if they are looking for a research assistant. Also, if you volunteer this coming semester, they are more likely to take you on. If they like your work they are likely to hire you over another applicant.

I've seen very few research jobs posted on OSCAR. Profs don't need to advertise jobs when students take the intiative inquire about jobs directly.

Good luck! Working in a research lab is a wonderful experience.

I would suggest volunteering for research positions first year if you're having trouble getting a position as a paid assistant, that way you'll increase your chances next year, plus its a lot easier getting into volunteering than paid..

If you take the initiative, and are a good overall student, you can get paid anyways.

Another thing I might suggest is applying as a research assistant/ tutor at the Deep River Science Academy. Here's a link with info: http://www.drsa.ca/blog/?page_id=160
