Don't lose your student card on a friday.
I almost lost my student card at mac today, but because of the kindness of a good sumaritan, I was able to retrieve it.
So what's the problem?
Everything closes early on friday. By the time I realized I lost my student card, it was 5:30. The office of the registrar and macexpress both close early, so there's no way to cancel your student card out of business hours. I couldn't even see if anyone found it because the lost and found closed at 4pm.
Does it really take that much effort to have an online way to deactivate your lost student card, like there is for the meal plans?

What can a person do with your student card on a weekend, if the meal plan is disabled? Borrow some books?

I wonder how common it is for some sinister person to fraudulently use somebody's student card...?
I've always found it strange that titles/hospitality people don't look at people's cards when they're used, but I think that if you actually lost your card, chances are a nice person found it (in my experience)

They may not use it, but I don't like the anxiety that comes with knowing that someone could
use it. Since mac made the option to deactivate your meal card online, I'm sure they know that the possibility of your card being used fraudulently exists, so it only makes sense for them to make an option to cancel your student account yourself too.

You can deactivate your meal plan online during the weekends. Plus, your student card has a picture on it, so if someone wanted to use your card at titles the cashier would notice. (Or they should anyways since the bar code is in the front of the card where the picture is so they would see the picture then they scan the card).

You can check with security in the student centre to see if someone turned it in to them

don't you have to show another form of id when you use your student card at titles? so if you can deactivate the meal card and cant use it at titles then no problem? i guess they could use it the library but thats just stupid

you don't need other ID when buying from titles. you just need to sign the receipt when making purchases. but if the student card is signed on the back, I'm sure they can forge it.
but the library would be really bad though, because of all the fines.
I'm just saying theoretically, there should be a system in place.

I never thought of the consequences of losing my student card before reading this thread. Seems like a lot of things can go wrong

Think that may be the first time you set up your account and have to sign the little paper that lets you get the sticker. Essentially, if theres a sticker on your card, its your responsibility to ensure the card is in your posession.

As someone who has lost this card twice already, I approve this message.

It works just like a credit card. If you notice someone fraudulently bought $300 worth of books with your student card you simply go dispute it. They keep the signature receipt for this very reason. They present you the receipt, you say that is not your signature, and the liability is on them to remove the charges from your account.
