Elect Jacob Brodka for MSU President
My name is Jacob Brodka. I am a third year Honours Life Sciences student here at McMaster and I would love to be your next MSU President.
My decision to come to McMaster was an easy one - as soon as I had an opportunity to
experience the incredible sense of community on campus, I was sold. I’ve been privileged to have the chance to get involved with many different areas of both the McMaster Students Union (MSU) and McMaster. The amount of energy and passion I continue to see from students each and every day continues to motivate me to make a difference in our community.
The MSU is incredible because of the direct role it allows students to have in improving student experience and in driving change. In putting together my platform I wanted to make sure that I built something that students could not only connect to, but is also feasible and practical within the term of the MSU President. I decided to focus on three main areas: Student Life, Academics, and Communication.
Student Life: Students put in such a great amount of time and effort into this University and into this community. One of the jobs of the MSU is to help give back to students by making their student experience the best it possibly can be. With my platform I want to help celebrate you while continuing to foster and build a strong sense of school spirit and pride.
Academics: The main reason we as students are all here at McMaster is to get a high quality education. I wanted to push the envelope on what the MSU is currently doing by making Academics a central part of my platform. I want to help encourage you to expand the horizons of your learning; while making sure that the MSU is there to help support you as you go.
Communication: Ideas are the backbone of creating meaningful change and progress. I believe that more needs to be invested in your ideas and therefore wanted to create a platform that gives you the power to decide on the changes you want to see. As MSU President, I will make it my responsibility to ensure that you as a student feel engaged with the MSU and the decision-making process.
McMaster is a school of 21,281 full-time undergraduate students with unique ideas and opinions. This election isn’t about one person, or one idea. It’s about continuing to grow and improve on what’s been successful while constantly seeking to create new possibilities. It’s about the incredible power we have to improve student life at McMaster when we all #cometogether.
Please take a moment to go through some of my experiences on campus as well as my platform and learn more. I invite you to ask questions, get engaged and come by our campaign headquarters and introduce yourself!

Right. So the previous ones haven't done anything useful so far, and anything they did was either too late, or was something the university would have done anyways.
How are you going to be any different?

Okay. So I should care about your experiences on campus, or your experience in actually accomplishing something? You listed none of the latter by the way.

Yep, making students go to school when it's -40 outside. Thank you, I'm still sick.

Wait, giving something in return would imply we are giving you something. Oh ok, please tell me how much money it is you guys are getting, and what is the salary for that exact position you are going for?

The MSU President's salary is about $32,000 annually, plus a subsidized apartment, health and dental benefits. The MSU pays about $8,000 annually for the apartment.

That's a lot for having great experiences on campus.
Not everyone who busts their back in a warehouse gets the same benefits.

And yet many would consider 40K a pretty huge drop from what they could get working somewhere else for a year. Pay is a matter of perspective and i'm fine with it as long as they do a good job.
As for Jacob Brodka: do you intend to do anything that could make a noticeable difference to the student community? As someone whos been around 5 years but not involved with the MSU, the only thing significant I can think of the MSU pushing for was opening Thode 24 hours during Exam time. Studying on campus was pretty much impossible during exam times before that happened.

Which they don't. Of course, how can you expect someone to do anything when they take a full time course load.
MSU people get paid for having honorary titles, and not only that, but they also get to use it for their resumes. Which basically makes it a win win scenario for them.

From what I know, they are not allowed to take a full course load. They are restricted to taking a maximum of 6 units per academic school year due to their job being a full time position.
Pretty sure I read someone say that on MI.

I looked at the so-called "platform" and it contained nothing meaningful.

I will vote for you if the MSU president only gets paid $15,000 and the rest of the money will go improve student life.

you guys are way too angry/cynical and asking too much from something that can't really be more than what it is.
you're all destined to apathy and disappointment when you're proven correct.

That is just silly. 15k is nothing compared to the budget. there is no reason someone should work for less than their position is worth - don't be so cruel!

There's nothing of substance in your post.. how hard is it to explain what you want to do instead of typing out empty platitudes and talking points? Sigh.
1/10
edit: I see you actually explain yourself on your website. That's hopeful, I guess.

If that's true, there's really no excuse why they are so inert.

Is there a way to know what MSU President's business schedule is?
Like if he doesn't take full course load, and I don't think he needs to be in the office the rest of the time 5 days a week, then is there a reason he gets all those benefits?
