Emergency exercise to take place on campus May 3
Members of the McMaster community, including the University's neighbours, should be aware of an emergency planning exercise planned for Tuesday, May 3.

At some point that morning, a simulation of a serious incident will unfold on the west campus, using specially trained volunteers and working emergency-services personnel and vehicles.

Members of the community may notice unusual activity during the exercise and should not be alarmed.

The precise nature, timing and location of the simulated incident are not to be revealed until the exercise begins, so that emergency personnel can respond spontaneously.

The exercise will use realistic sounds and procedures, possibly including McMaster's emergency warning system, and will affect entrances and exits from buildings in the vicinity of the exercise.

The simulation is part of the University's ongoing emergency planning and preparation, designed to ensure McMaster is as prepared as possible for the possibility of genuine incidents.

On the day of the exercise, signs will be posted in the vicinity of the simulation. As the exercise unfolds, electronic signs and screens across campus will remind members of the community that a test is in progress.

So, I'm confused. Are we supposed to take part in this (like a fire drill, for instance) or know that it's happening and ignore it?

lizziepizzie: You should be aware that the exercise is happening and carry on with normal activities. Signs will be posted and some areas will be cordoned off, so follow the signs for instructions.

The whole point of an Emergency exercise is that you participate in it, so when an actual situation occurs you know what to do (rough idea at least)

EDIT:

Or not?

Why is this being done when school is out?

Doesn't that make the whole point moot?

School isn't 'out'.

The exercise is meant to test emergency responders as well as the University's emergency response plan.

Part of me is a little terrified that this may be a real emergency disguised as an exercise and the Macinsiders account "Daily News" is conspiring with the terrorists to ensure the plan proceeds with minimal resistance.

...But I have to go because that's the first day of class. :(

Edit: Oh wait, it's in the morning. I'm safe. :D
