Employers asking for facebook passwords

What is your opinion on the matter? Would you do it? I think it is a complete invasion of privacy; it is like them asking for access to your email, IMO.

Learned this in class, you can simply say "no", the interview will continue as normal, and the interviewer will seem un-phased... but when it comes to down choosing who gets the job, I'm pretty sure you won't be getting that "I'll let you know later this week" call.

It is very much an invasion of privacy. I don't agree with it, and there needs to be stronger laws to enforce it. I'm not sure what I would do in that situation.

That's messed up. I wouldn't agree to this. O__O

No one needs to snoop one's facebook messages and pictures to decide if they want to hire them. Wtf is this.

Not only does this violate your personal privacy in terms of statuses, pictures etc but it actually violates a few laws because it would grant access to your private messages (similar to email laws). It also completely violates your friends' privacy who have not given their permission.

As an update facebook has announced it will start suing companies known to doing this. Also several members of congress are in the process of editing current privacy laws to expand into facebook and other social media. Those laws will eventually make it to canada as well.

just deactivate it before said interview and claim you don't have facebook. I won't have this problem b/c I really didn't want to read all the shallow fb statuses girls post anways, and deleted my account ages ago...

I would simply say that I don't have a Facebook account.

There is no way they can prove I have one.

you realize facebook sells your information right? They can certainly "prove" you have an account.

I don't have real information in my account.

all that needs to be the same is the email address you gave your employer or a correct name. Then they will have access to every post you have made, pictures, etc.

I don't use my last name on facebook, and I have 5 different email accounts that I use for different things. In fact, I never give out the email I use for facebook, so yeah, I'm good.

You can always say you don't remember your password since it's been saved on your browser for a year or two.

USA PATRIOT Act. Definitely not a violation of the law, according to that little document.

This is just wrong in my opinion.

It's one thing for an employer to look you up on Facebook. That way, they can see if you're stupid enough to share drunk pictures and stupid comments with everyone in the world. If you make it public, there's no problem with them seeing it.

But why would they need your FB password? To read your private messages? That's no different than asking for your email password, asking to see your text messages, listening in on your private phone calls or recording what you say to your husband in your home.

It's very wrong and unnecessary. I would never, ever work for a company that asked for my Facebook password.

Here's a different spin on this:

What if the issue were employers requesting the ability to see your wall, and unrestricted access to your photos? Is it still an unreasonable invasion of privacy?
