Engineer 4M06 - 4th year capstone
Hey macinsiders peeps,

So I'll be entering my final year in mechanical engineering next year and I'm thinking about taking the Multi-disciplinary capstone course in place of the regular mech eng capstone course.

I know this course is relatively new (this year might be its pilot year), but I'm hoping there are engineers (and maybe non-engineers) that can contribute their experience, opinions etc. What do you guys think?

Signed,

Engineer-in-training

Im not exactly sure what you will be doing in your capstone course but, being in Eng Management, almost every group project we have involves working in multidisciplinary teams. Its challenging to work around everyones schedules but everyone has different ideas so its interesting.

yeah....dunno if this helps or is like totally irrelevent

I know it's the first year of doing it.

Here is the email I received for it this Feb. (even though I was graduating ^^;

Quote:
A new Final Year multidisciplinary project-based capstone course in Engineering will be offered in September 2011 (Engineering 4M06). Students will work in teams of 5 from at least 2 different Engineering departments to solve real-world problems. This course will be taken instead of the capstone course in the student’s department. The course outline is at:

http://www.eng.mcmaster.ca/documents..._outlin e.pdf

The important aspects of the course are:
1. Enrollment is limited to 50 students (10 teams of 5).
2. Each team member must have a CA of at least 8.0.
3. Each team must comprise members from at least 2 Engineering departments, and there must be at least 1 Engineering and Management student.
4. The course is not open to students in Engineering Physics.
5. Advance planning and work before June 2011 is required for this course.

There will be in information session to explain the course and for students to network to form potential teams:

Thursday, February 10, 2011
5:30 – 7:30
KTH-B135

Wow. I’m in my second year and I thought that since I saw this course listed since high school on the course calendar that this wasn’t the first year. I hope everything goes well because I already plan on taking this version with friends from different departments. In the real world, we will be working on multi disciplinary teams. Good luck.

Do you know why its not open to Eng Phys? It just seems odd that they would specifically state that.

I can only speculate at best, but I would assume it cannot replace your capstone(s).

The results of capstones are really epic, but they do seem extremely hard. :|

In my final year I had 4 courses I could have qualified as "capstone" - 2 materials and 2 society. INSAAAAAAAAAAAAAANE.
