How is Engineering Physics like?
Hello guys,

I am currently in Engineering I and soon, I will have to decide which stream I will go into for 2nd year. Now, I originally wanted to go into mechanical, but I realized that I disliked physics 1d03. As second semester rolled around, I found that I am enjoying 1e03 much more than 1d03. So, I figured I would go into electrical engineering.

However, I also read about engineering physics, and attended the engineering physics fairs that they had set up. It seems like a really interesting stream, particularly because eng phys students seem to learn more theoretical stuff (e.g. quantum mechanics and mathematical physics), that regular eng students don't. I really like learning for the sake of learning, so I think I would enjoy engineering physics (particularly the nanotechnology stream) very much.

But the problem is, I don't know how well engineering physics is known to employers. I asked the eng phys reps about their co-op jobs, and one of them told me that he worked at a bank for co-op. I found that strange, because I thought "what is an engineering physicist doing working at a bank?" So I guess my question is, what kinds of career opportunities are available with an eng phys (in the nanotech stream) degree?

Thanks,
-Nash

I know someone in eng phys, they said it's a pretty tough program (not trying to dissuade you). But when they told me the stuff they learn, yeah its pretty cool stuff that I can't imagine other programs even touch upon.

Electrical eng isn't a bad option either, from what I hear first year doesn't really give you a clear indication of what the program is really like or how difficult it will be (compared to d03 or e03 for example).

Based on my experience with 1d04 last year, software for example is nothing like 1d04. First year courses are there to give you an introduction, but they don't really touch anything too important.

A bank job is really odd, unless that person really wanted to go into a banking career, i don't think you should think you'll end up with a bank job. I'm sure there are eng phys job out there. Nuclear energy, R&D for nano and im sure others. I don't know much about eng phys, so I can't really say much more.

There is also a nuclear reactor and a linear particle accelerator on campus (both near thode).

Hi, thanks for your response! :-) Is it possible that I could contact your friend in some way (preferably via text or email)? Thanks again :-)
