In North America its meant to be Aeris. But, due to the unique position of FFVII - one of the most popular, diehard fanbases of any RPG (they've lasted this long, lol), one of the first jrpgs to really make it, an extremely remember-able and 'sacred' character (her ending was one of the first times something like that ever happened, and was a huge shock at the time...) - Aerith is pretty much what most forums use these days, even the US ones. I've never met anyone who used to 's' over the 'th' but I only played FFVII later on, since i was an N64 kid until PS2.
Besides, Aerith looks prettier and Aeris, imho, and sounds prettier. 'Aeris' is 'aries,' God of War, or Eris, goddess of strife (hehehe Strife) depending on how you deal with the ae sound. Aerith is airy, girly, more fitting...
(In Japanese, 'Aerith' is pronounced like 'Aeris,' which is why they changed it in the first place. Most people I know say Aerith the way an English speaker would (Air-eth)). No voice acting in the original is win.
Funny tidbit: the EXACT SAME THING happens for Sephiroth (Sephiros orally in Japan), but they kept it as -th in English. Listen to "One Winged Angel" and you can hear the -os instead of the -th you expect in English. That's because the OWA track is the same in both languages, and so has the JPN pronunciation.
tl;dr The part of the Fanbase I know has basically rallied around Aerith in the year since 1997, both are right depending on what language you speak.
