Being a math/stat major, which courses will I have to take in the first semester?

1X03 for sure because you need it for 1XX3. I think 1B03 is offered both semesters. Not sure about 1C03. Then you choose what courses you want, some are offered only in 1 term (1st or 2nd), some are offered in both terms, and some are full year courses (spans both terms).

Thanks. I got a 5 in my AP Calc BC exam, so I'll get credit for MATH1X03, won't I? Which subjects other than maths will I have to take in the 1st semester: can I take whatever I like?

In first year you have to complete the following courses:
Requirements: 30 units
12 units MATH 1B03, 1C03, 1X03, 1XX3
3 units from courses in the Faculty of Science (See Program Notes 2 and 3 above.)
15 units Electives (See Program Note 4 above.)
So you cant really take whatever you want..except for the electives.
Electives:
http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /calen...-12/pg103.html
When it says 15 units, it means 5 courses (1 course is usually 3 units, so 15units/3=5 courses, each of which is 3 units)

Thanks. Could you give me the list of courses in the Faculty of Science?

Not sure what you mean by courses in the faculty of science...if you mean electives, then the ones in the link above are the electives that everyone chooses from , regardless of their program..
If you mean courses from math and stats then:
Mathematics:

Statistics:

Also, how come there are no compulsory stat courses in the 1st year?

Go through the courses. Faculty of Science are courses like Bio, Math, Earth Sciences, Astronomy, etc...

2.Students may substitute COMP SCI 1FC3, 1MA3, 1MD3 for the 3 units required from the Faculty of Science.
3.Completion of COMP SCI 1MD3 is required for admission to the Honours Mathematics and Computer Science program.
I got these points from here: http://registrar.mcmaster.ca /CALEN...13/pg1491.html
I am not sure why there are no stat courses in first year.

There is no stats courses for a math & stats major in first year. In second year, you are required to take Stats 2D03 (Introduction to Probability) - offered only in first term or summer. Following this you can take Stats 2MB3 (Statistical Methods and Applications) - offered only in second term.
It's strange that you pick between a Math or Stats specialization for second year, yet you won't be subjected to any statistics in first year.

Can the electives be courses from the Faculty of Science as well?
So, people usually take 5 courses per semester?

Electives can be any course which you have the requirements to take. Edit: Or courses where you can get the prerequisite waived.
Yes, 5 courses per semester is a full course load.

Yes, those 15 units of electives can be from any faculty/department you'd like, I believe. And yes, 5 courses/semester is the "normal" full course load.

IMO, you shouldn't skip Math 1X03 since it covers most fundamental theorems and topics such as epsilon-delta definition of limit, MVT(mean value theorem), etc which you will need for real analysis.
