full course load
If I take an online course at Athabasca U between (Sept- April) and 9 courses at Mac, would it still count as a full course load for the year?

It would for something like grad school applications. But the course would not show up at McMaster. You would probably want to contact OSAP, if on it, to figure out if things would work differently because the tuition fees are different between universities

I think a full course load is technically 24 credits (8 half year courses), so if you do 9, you should still be a full time student

Full-time student does not equal full course load. A full course load is taking the maximum amount of units per year (Most programs is 30, engineering is 37 or something like that). A full-time student is taking 24 or more units (I guess engineering would be different) during the year.
