ppl just tell others to get swabbed without exactly explaining what it is for...
So is this about finding a match for bone marrow stem cell transplantation?

I think it's important to explain this all ... I understand the significance to this swabbing challenge. Yes to get more donors signed up on the bone marrow donor list.
however, I think people need to really take into account what this means. I know that if you are on the donor list, and end up a match for someone in need; you still have the opportunity to decline if you want. But it's important to decide whether that decision in something you think you can handle when the moment comes. It is a painful proceedure, and also something great to be able to save someone's life.
BUT, if you get swabbed impulsively withouth really considering it, it might end up being a stressful situation of deciding later on that it wasn't what you really wanted to do, and now you have to literally decline the opportunity to save that life.

So, I'm all for people signing up and getting swabbed...BUT i do believe it's important to think about the consequences and consider your stance on donating thoroughly beforehand.

Generally yes it is called the One Match program. You are put on a donar list. They will call you if you match with a person who needs it, you are in no way obligated to donate if the time comes and you do not want too. The actual procedure you are under anesthetic and the person today described it feeling like you fell down. You will be sore but not excruciating pain (which is what I though) Like i said before an advil and you are good. The recipient is the hospital for 100 days after the the marrow i get put in. ( what the rep told me) I was swabbed four times took like 20 minutes less maybe.

However I know for sure if i get called I will donate but I agree you should generally know your stance before you put yourself on the donar list. There was SO many people out today it was very nice to see

Dont like that the main draw was to break the world record instead of helping people ; \

Must've been the volunteer. Everyone around me who was volunteering and I were always talking about the process, length, and cause. The record's just a bonus, really. As a volunteer, I feel that most of us don't really care less about breaking the record or competing with other universities. Those are trivial compared to getting people on the list.

And yes, being on the list and having to make that decision later makes you feel more obligated to donate if the time ever comes.

I agree with the post above. The record was sort of an incentive to gather even MORE people (i.e. the whole point of the event) knowing that a lot will do so to support Mac for the world record..

And hey, when I was there, they had about 1100 names registered. Regardless of what the main cause of the event, that's definitely an accomplishment to both the database and Mac.

I got swabbed last year, then I think they sent me a mail telling me that I can't donate for some reason not health related.

That is really weird :S. From what I got today, apparently if all the cells from all 4 sides of your mouth don't have the same DNA, you can't donate.. Why? I have no idea :S..

I believe I misplaced the letter while moving out of mac. Well, people can try...maybe because they didn't have access to my whole medical history since I wasn't born/raised here?

I'd just hope that all of the cells in your mouth would be diploid...

You know what I'm talking about...

Sorry, I didn't understand. Rephrase and be as clear as you can about what you are implying.
