It's for students who prefer to hold onto their MUSS accounts! No costs for Switching over to Google.

Will I have to setup mail forwarding again once the new mail system is live, given that I will not opt-out.

Hey Matt & Huzaifa,
Thanks so much for the update and for your efforts. On the note of recycled MacID's...since the email is then still active for whomever uses it, doesn't that become a big privacy concern?
For instance, I register for several things with my Mac email given that employers, etc prefer a more formal one and Gmail just doesn't cut it all the time. However, if after I graduate, somebody else gets my MacID and receive email meant for me, (given that most students would not keep track of every person they give their email to), wouldn't that be a problem?

I was told by UTS that, as long as I forward my MUSS email to another email account, I would always be able to receive it. That means that [email protected] a would always be sent to me, and couldn't be recycled to another student.
If you choose not to forward your MUSS emails, then your MUSS account is closed.
If you're still using your MUSS email after you graduate, it shouldn't be recycled.

Ahh. So would this work with the new Gmail system? Because if I always get MUSS mail for life, then I'll probably just stick with MUSS and continue forwarding to Gmail.

Hey Bushra great question!
First off you won't have MUSS mail for life, it will expire when you graduate. So whether you opt out or go with Gmail your account will expire when you graduate. The issue here is providing students an alumni email account when they graduate since MUSS does not continue nor will these Gmail accounts. Since we already have accounts set up for Undergrads, and we have the privacy contract I believe this is the next logical step.

According to this page on the UTS website alumni students once graduated can opt to keep their e-mail active and forward somewhere (ie. to their personal email and keep their mcmaster.ca email going forever..)
The catch? You gotta pay.
Alumni Email
Graduating students may choose to retain their McMaster email account. Alumni may also choose to forward their McMaster email to their personal email account without having the ability to send messages from their McMaster email account.
"There is an annual charge to maintain Alumni McMaster email account of $110/year. This amount is payable by cheque to UTS, McMaster University."

lol, really, why didnt they just make it cheaper/year, i highly doubt it actually costs them that much a year, just to manage one mcmaster account. I would just make my own site, with a personalized email, so it becomes [email protected] would look more proffesional as well, to me atleast.

If the space on a server costs the school even $5/year to maintain, per user contained on it, I'll be a monkey's uncle.
