Some free desserts and something to slap on your resume. I think it's worth it. C'mon guys, education isn't cheap, and every little push to help you in the future in a career that will define the rest of your lives, to me, is worth 90 bucks. (hey if you don't get it, you could always get a couple xbox games, *sarcasm*).

It's not necessarily more invites...you could just be further down on the list. We're not really sure how they are numbered, except that it's likely not alphabetical. Upper years might be lower on the list, or it could be based on academic standing or something.

I have a sibling, their numbering is one less than mine.

Yup, same faculty, same last name, different levels. Numbering was off by 1 last year as well. I suspect it could be alphabetical by macID or alphabetical.

I joined after first year. I didn't end up getting involved until my last year when they started up a volunteer trip to Kenya. During this time, we set up a partnership with our group and a rural high school and we taught their high school curriculum and played games with them. I thought the trip was a worthwhile experience and it's definitely had a huge impact on my life.

The other members of my team were the exec members and they talked about going to conferences, raising money for the United Way, setting up volunteer initiatives, and pub nights. They also send you discounts for course preparation, shopping, and there's the opportunity to get scholarships. I would imagine that the scholarships would be difficult to get since you're competing with other students that are academically successful. I haven't tried myself though.

I got an invite too. Didn't even know I was in the top 15%. If nothing else you could put that your in the top 15% of your class on your resume, and will have that letter as proof (as far as I know, mac doesn't even publish class rankings, so this in itself is useful).

There's no way Im paying the 90 bucks and actually joining though.

Can I ask about what averages were, those that were invited? I'm just curious to see what it takes in be in the top 15%.

The only thing that concerns me is that the letter isn't addressed specifically to me. It says "Dear Student" :(

as above posters have already said, its kind of impossible to tell if those "invited" were the "official" top 15%. To answer your question though, My cumulative average is an 11.3 and my sessional average last year was 11.1. Hope this helps. I'm still pretty skeptical on joining. Hopefully we can get some more info.

Apparently the info comes from the registrar's office.

.. I just got my letter now and was excited at first, then felt it was a grab for my $90.00 and felt kind of betrayed. While it seems neat and all, I think it's extremely unfair that the University would condone this kind of "society" when they, of anyone, should know how much money we already pour into our education each year. If it was free I would join no problem, but it doesn't quite give a clear explanation of what the society is and how a student will benefit from it. The scholarships are probably ridiculously competitive too, and I feel like I wouldn't get my money's worth; it'd be like paying to beef up your resume.

Nonetheless, I may just schedule an appointment with some kind of academic advisor to see how legit this is.

haha I did that too. i got the letter again this year and my parents want me to join. I told them I'd do it if they pay for it lol.

I assume the $90 from each member goes a long way...

Say 20000 x 15% = 3000 x 90... lots of funding.
