Lol, fine they probably won't lose people. But Gmail and Google Wave are different services. Well, Gmail is like part of Google Wave. So is Google Docs, Google Photos, Google Blogs and probably a couple other things. So if anything Google Wave will sync all these services up or replace them completely.

Sounds like how I used MSN's Remote Assistance to write essays with a friend.

Great tool for collaborating. I like how everything is real-time. However, the 'live typing' I would probably turn off when sending emails.. I like to type things, think about them, and then edit things before sending.
The one feature I really love is that you can reply to e-mails WITHIN the actual message as a 'thread' instead of copying/pasting and adding your comments in a different colour like we do now...

But that doesn't allow both of you to type does it? Doesn't make you have control over your friend's computer?

I would turn it off when sending e-mails as well. I also like to think and edit my e-mails so they turn out somewhat professional.

I've done it before with Remote Assist...when you're controlling your friend's computer, they can still type and move the mouse as well. Your typing/movement just 'overrides' theirs.
So the worst part is if you both get the hankering to type at the exact same instant haha...then your typing will conflict and the words will very quickly turn into gibberish haha.
But my friend and I got the hang of doing it, and it wound up going quickly and easily. (though Remote Assist is a bit of a drain on one's resources)

Wow... how do you literally type an essay in real time with someone else? Doesn't it get ridiculously complicated? I can't imagine writing anything simultaneously with someone else in real time :p.

Well, are there even collaborative essays? I would imagine one person write while the other edits. But I don't think I would use this service to write entire assignments. I prefer allocating jobs to everyone. The editing can definitively be done in real time though. It would save a lot of time and hassle.

This is so sick. First Voice, now this, I am tres excited about all the new Google projects this year.
Although hopefully they become easier for the public to get their hands on soon!

It sounds cool, but I'm not convinced. Yes, just like most Google projects, it has some really cool features, but it's going to have the same problems that all of Google's other online collab tools suffer from:
Most people don't know about them or know how to use them.
Google is still, as far as my experience with group work goes, filling a niche rather than a high-demand service. For me, I don't even bother trying to do group work online with Google docs because my group members never know about it and I'm not interested in trying to teach them (I hate wasting time).
I also don't use Gmail, since I prefer the desktop approach of Outlook.
I think Google is a lot like Apple, where Apple makes cool gadgets (and overpriced computers), and Google makes cool software, but neither of them are mainstream or leaders in their respective markets (with the obvious exception that Google is #1 in internet search).
I'll be paying attention to Google Wave (since I find it interesting, and am a techie), but the majority of the population won't be, and of that I am sure.
