So I found this review online
"Aging and Society 1BB3 - The essay was worth 35% of your final grade and exam was 40% with midterm being 25%. If you're not a good essay person this may be a huge disadvantage for you."

I currently have this course as my elective
but I really suck at writing essays (takes me hrs to come up w/ a decent one)
so if it DOES involve a lot of writing, I'll switch it to my other preferred course
anyone know if this is true? that it involves a lot of writing?
also, I read elsewhere that the essay assignment used to be worth 20%. So they changed it now?

My friend took it and she said the essay she had to write was a reflection about the placement she did in a nursing home (everyone has to do a placement somewhere). She said it wasn't too hard.

BUT if you want to drop the course... want to message me Cause I really want in!

During the winter term of 2011 (most recent term course was offered) , the exam was 40, essay/reflection was 20, midterm was 20, tutorials were 10, volunteering/discussion group was 10.

This was the breakdown I had when I took it last year. The one with the essay as 35% is the summer term I believe. The essay was super-easy. All you need to do is relate your placement to what you learned in class (discuss at least 3 topics). It was definitely one of the easiest essays I've ever had to write. It was more of self-reflection more than anything, really. Let me know if you have any more questions . Also, I loved the course, don't let the essay part scare you away!

also, is there a lot of other writing assignments in the course?
thanks

I'm taking this course in Term 1 too It sounds like a lot of fun, I've done a course similar to this before and it really isn't that bad, it's pretty interesting and you'll be able to write a decent essay if you're interested in the topic!

If you put in a decent amount of work (i.e. don't write it all the night before), then yes, an A is definitely possible. I believe the average for the essay was a 75 % or something, so a lot of people did get 80s or 90s and up.
Also, there's no other writing assignments. If you choose a discussion group, you have to prepare a really short presentation. My discussion leaders asked for a written copy, but even that was super easy (1 page double spaced summary), but a lot of others didn't ask for one .
