Hooker/Senate Scholarship
Hey guys,

How do we get these scholarships? Do we have to apply for them?

I know they're awarded based on academics.

You do not apply for them. How do you get them? Someone please do correct me if I'm wrong, but you get them depending on how everyone in your faculty performs for the year. They do some calculations depending on the funding available, and how many people got an average of 9.5 or over on 30 units and allocate the scholarships to people appropriately. In addition, I believe you can get either the Hooker or Senate and not both but please someone do correct if I'm wrong.

You don't need to apply for the Senate or Hooker scholarship; they are granted automatically if you meet the cut-off for the awards, which are different every year and for different faculties. For a reference, here are the cutoffs for last year: http://sfas.mcmaster.ca/pdf/2011/2011_2012%20Sessional %20Cut-off%20for%20award.pdf And yes, you only get either the Senate or Hooker (Hooker has higher cutoff average).

Last year, they were paid in July 24 so check back later in the summer.

Are scholarships for the year before or the year coming up? I was a fulltime student last year with a very high average but would be coming back next year as a part time student and therefore not meeting the requirements for the scholarship next year.

In the scenario you have presented, it would have to be the year before I believe.

You might get the title but not actually be eligible for the money. I know that happens in some cases, not sure if this falls into that category though.

Ya it might depend based on some more factors in your case

I know for students who graduate, they still get the award if they met the necessary grades in their graduating year, but they do not get the money (just the award title itself). So depending on your specific circumstances it'll probably vary, send an email to them to make sure!
