I cannot stress how pivotal this course (and Dr. Savelli's lecturing + guidance) in shaping how I have come to think of (mental) health. As someone else had mentioned, this is a MUST for all social science students, and honestly, I would recommend this to every student looking for an elective - health is ubiquitous regardless of your faculty or walk of life, and being able to discern between social/cultural aspects for good and evil is of paramount importance.
What are the power dynamics that go into shaping what we consider illness? What is a culture-bound syndrome? Why are certain addictions pathologized while others are to be mocked? Running amok? drapetomania?
etc. etc.
Take this course.
