Hthsci 1pa3
Each week, a different biomedical researcher comes in and talks about his research. The field of study ranges from stem cells to microbes to Huntington's disease etc. Textbooks are not required and there is no final exam.
Course breakdown:
Pass/ Fail Basis
1. 22 minute papers-short summary of the lecture (bullet form), handed in at the end of class
2. weekly journal entries- reflect on the research implications, <400 words
3. weekly journal addendum- summarize main concepts, <100 words
4. 2 reflective journals- select and research two topics you find most interesting, <500 words
Overall, this course is really easy and interesting. I'm pretty bad at writing but managed to pass all my submissions anyways. It definitely helped lighten my course load during the term.

I agree, probably one of my favourite courses from first year.
Basically just go to class, and listen (the profs are interesting!), and the journals are a breeze.

It's stated that the course is evaluated on a pass/fail basis....what does that mean in terms of points? Can you either get a 12 or a 0?

No, it's either a pass or fail. As long as you achieve a certain percentage you pass the course and it'll appear as complete on your transcript.

To people who recently took the course, would you say that it is possible to just sit in on it and not be noticed? Or is it too small of a class? Thanks!

I'm taking it in 2016 winter, now the only evaluations are 2 short quizzes. one asks you to list a few concepts/words you associate with the presentation, 2 questions you have for the presenter. second one is just rating the presenter on their slides and pace and presenting skills. Takes 5 minutes to do both. Then in groups of 5 people, you write a short research paper each week about any aspect or idea taken from the lecture, it could be remotely related but yeah. Its maximum 1000 words, so 1 person writes 200 maximum which is quite little and hard to not go over. Definitely a must if you have a heavy course load like bio 1a03 and 1m03 in the same term.
