To be honest I have never had this problem. Basement of thode has many quiet study areas, and there is always the option of earplugs/music if you need absolute silence.
Personally I find it harder to find an area where 5/6 people can work and also have a suitable workspace as well as access to power for la[tops.

Lol, currently in HSC Library at the couches and it's kinda loud, ngl.
Better than mills or thode, though.
Also, if you want a quiet area, go to Thode basement, there's little to no noise there since they've made it an independent study area with cubicles and stuff. There's quiet places, you just need to find them.
EDIT: damn, Kyle beat me to it. D:

In the Fall a group of guys were talking really loudly in the basement of Thode. Eventually, a girl went over and told them to leave. They laughed at first, but she didn't move and looked serious, and they actually packed up their stuff and left.
Library bouncers should be angry girls.

And I laughed out loud at this.
And I actually mean that I audibly laughed. So thanks for that.
HAS NOBODY BEEN TO THE INDVIDUAL STUDY ROOMS IN MILLS? One small room, fits small number of people. If you are in there, the room is considered taken and no one else comes in. There are several of them. This may also be good for the people who won't chut up to go and have their conversations so other people are not bothered.

People still seem to under estimate the power of simple earplugs or music you find relaxing. Yeah it sucks that you might have to use it even when you are in a supposedly silent study area, but in the world there is dicks, and the dicks aren't going to go anywhere. Take control of the situation so you are in a silent study area even if dicks are present

I sleep with earplugs. They are quite effective.

Yeah you got to be kidding me. People still think that the basement of Thode is still a group study and the next time I am there and people start talking all hells are going to break loose.

I don't like how there's actually group study rooms in Thode, but they aren't sound-proof. I was talking at a normal volume and people could hear me outside. I don't even talk too loud. I seldomly even get told to talk louder...

Mac seriously needs to restructure the study areas. Single study cubicles, separate from any bookstacks, larger tables where groups could gather, and study rooms.
Then people need to have more respect and not be ignorant.
Then maybe we can study lol.

I sleep with earplugs as well. While they might be useful if there's only one or two people talking quietly, I think they would be useless if there is a group of people yelling/laughing loudly. Earplugs drown out some noise, but not all of it.
Having said that, quiet study spaces don't need to be SILENT.. But some people are simply ignorant and over the top noisy. My only suggestion is try to find an empty room or lecture hall. Though that seems to be getting harder as well.
