What to include in a resume
I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this question, but I couldn't find anywhere else.
I'm an international student due to study in McMaster from September - December this year.
As part of our online application we need to attach a resume.
However, I am not sure what to include in this.
In Ireland we use CVs (Cirriculum Vitaes). Mine is about 2-3 pages long and states information such as My qualifications and awards, my education, my voluntary work, my skills and qualities and my hobbies and interests. There is also a section stating referees, who are people I have worked for before and can be contacted to verify information.
Is a resume the same as this? Or is there anything I need to omit and/or include?

Similar but different format. Here it's seperated into cover letter+resume. See examples (engineering but relevant)

I could be wrong but I believe we use both systems.
-A resume (a maybe cover letter) is used to apply to jobs in industry
-A CV is used to apply to academia (for example I know many people that needed CV's to apply to various masters/phd/professional programs)

In content the resume and CV seem very similar but a normal resume is usually much shorter (1.5 pages) and highlights work experience. We also rarely provide references on resumes, but you should for CV...

For Mac I would just hand in the CV. It is probably what they want anyways

Thanks, I might just cut down my CV a bit and also leave out the referees.

you may want to contact Mac and ask them. I would see references as pretty important for Academia...despite the fact they are asking for a resume.

The references I have relate to my previous work, nothing academic, from my lecturers, for example. Would I still need to collect them?

The standard line for references on resumes is "available upon request". However, if Mac has requested them, then you should include them.

If you're part of the Faculty of Science, I highly recommend visiting the Science Career and Co-Op Education office on the first floor of BSB (beside Associate Dean's office). They can assist you with the creation and critique of your resume.

If you are not part of the Faculty of Science, try going to the Student Success Centre! They will gladly help you! It is located in Gilmour Hall, Rm 110.
